New Jersey Transit officials are investigating a crash that involved one of its trains in Hazlet this afternoon.
The incident happened on Bethany Road in Hazlet Township where a vehicle collided with a NJ transit train killing an elderly man shortly before 1 p.m.
According to preliminary reports, the man apparently went around the railroad gates and crashed into an oncoming train. The crash pinned the man inside the vehicle.
Hazlet police said Bethany Road remains closed and motorists can use Hazlet Avenue or Holmdel Road to avoid the closure.
The crash remains under investigation.
