NJ Transit Bus Strikes Two, Killing One in Newark's Central Ward

A tragic bus accident in Newark’s Central Ward claimed the life of one person and left another severely injured early Sunday morning.

According to Newark Police, The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation where the incident occurred at approximately 12:17 a.m. in the 400 block of Springfield Avenue near Holland Street. 

Emergency responders rushed to the scene following multiple reports of two pedestrians being struck by a New Jersey Transit bus.

Upon arrival, first responders encountered a large crowd and found one of the victims trapped beneath the bus. 

Firefighters and University Hospital rescue personnel worked frantically to extricate the individual while administering CPR. Despite their efforts, the adult male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The second pedestrian suffered leg injuries and was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

Police secured the area and dispersed the crowd while NJ Transit detectives and Essex County Prosecutor’s Office officials collected evidence and witness statements. 

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation.
