Authorities in Atlantic County announced that on Thursday, April 3, Atlantic City Police Officer Joshua Munyon, 24, from Egg Harbor Township, was charged with first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, second-degree Sexual Assault, and second-degree Official Misconduct.
According to ACPO officials, on September 13, 2024, an adult female with the initials A.L. reported to the Atlantic City Police Department that she was sexually assaulted by Officer Munyon after having multiple contacts with him earlier that morning during his official capacity as a uniformed police officer.
Atlantic County authorities stated that A.L. reported that after Officer Munyon served her with a summons for being intoxicated at the Tropicana Casino, he transported her to a parking lot within Atlantic City.
While there, Officer Munyon sexually assaulted her, ACPO officials say.
A.L. disclosed injuries to her wrists due to being handcuffed during the assault as well as chipped toenails due to the position she was in when the assault occurred inside Officer Munyon’s patrol vehicle, Atlantic City Police said.
According to Atlantic County officials, Officer Munyon transported A.L. back to the Tropicana after the assault, where she disclosed what happened to Tropicana security staff, prompting a response from the Atlantic City Police Department.
Detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit were subsequently dispatched, Atlantic County officials stated.
ACPO authorities said further investigation produced video surveillance depicting A.L. getting in and out of Officer Munyon’s patrol vehicle as well as location data from Officer Munyon’s patrol vehicle detailing his route of travel and corroborating statements made by A.L.
Witness statements further revealed Officer Munyon affirmatively denied to supervisors that A.L. was ever under arrest or inside his vehicle, Atlantic City Police stated.
ACPO officials say Munyon was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he is pending a First Appearance and detention hearing.
This incident was and continues to be investigated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Special Victims Unit, and Professional Standards and Accountability Unit.
