Authorities in Evesham have arrested a Cherry Hill man in connection with a fraud scheme after an investigation revealed an attempt to scam a resident out of tens of thousands of dollars.
According to law enforcement officials, the case came to light on February 13, 2025, when a resident reported a suspicious phone call to Evesham detectives.
The caller, posing as an FBI agent, falsely claimed the victim owed the government $40,000 and directed them to withdraw the funds.
The scammer further instructed the resident that a "courier" would arrive at their home to collect the cash.
Detectives quickly launched an investigation and determined the call was part of a fraudulent scheme.
Acting swiftly, investigators intercepted the supposed courier before he could reach the victim’s residence. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Brij Shukla of Cherry Hill, was taken into custody without incident.
Shukla has been charged with third-degree Criminal Attempt – Theft by Deception. In accordance with New Jersey’s Bail Reform Law of 2017, he was released on a summons pending his first appearance in Burlington County Superior Court.
Authorities emphasize that these types of scams are taken very seriously, and investigations into fraudulent schemes remain a top priority.
The Evesham Police Department urges anyone with information about this incident to come forward.
Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious phone calls or fraudulent schemes to law enforcement to help prevent future scams.
