According to NJ State Police, the 65-year-old man who reported being the victim of an alleged robbery made the elaborate story up.
This past Monday, police responded to Route 9 and Ash Road in Bass River Township, Burlington County at approximately 11:25 a.m. for a report of an armed robbery.
Upon arrival, police spoke to Michael Cohen, 65, of Bass River, who according to police had a remarkable ability to recall minor details of the alleged robbery.
Cohen described the suspect as a white male with two earrings - one on his right ear and one on his nose -, and recalled the suspect spoke with a British or English accent.
The Composite Artist Unit put together a sketch of the alleged suspect. Cohen also provided police with a description of the suspect's vehicle - possibly a Hyundai Santa Fe with tinted windows - who had damage to the driver’s side rear bumper, and a light-colored license plate.
Once detectives began investigating, they were able to determine that this whole story was bogus.
Michael Cohen was charged with filing a false police report earlier today at Tuckerton Station.
He was released pending Court.
