NJ Man Indicted on Firearms, Drug Charges Following Undercover Investigation

Federal authorities have indicted Cody Starr, a 35-year-old resident of Mount Holly, New Jersey, on multiple firearms and drug-related charges, as announced today by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Court documents reveal that, from October 13, 2022, to November 8, 2022, undercover federal agents conducted a series of controlled purchases of firearms and methamphetamine from Starr at his residence.AdDuring this period, agents reportedly acquired about 12 firearms, all classified as privately made firearms (PMFs), from Starr. During several of these transactions, Starr was allegedly armed, including with a PMF machine gun.

A subsequent search of Starr's residence yielded a significant arsenal, including over 50 privately made firearms, firearm magazines, ammunition, gun parts, a 3D printer, and various firearm manufacturing accessories.

If convicted, Starr faces a range of potential penalties. The drug distribution charges alone carry a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to $1 million.

The charge of firearm possession by a convicted felon carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while possession of a machine gun could lead to a maximum sentence of 10 years and an additional $250,000 fine.

The charges of firearm possession in connection with drug trafficking entail a mandatory minimum of five years, with the potential for a life sentence, plus fines of up to $250,000. Lastly, each count of unlicensed firearms trafficking carries a maximum five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. 

Federal officials said Starr faces serious allegations, including illegal firearms possession, unlicensed firearms trafficking, and distribution of methamphetamine.

The indictment includes charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a machine gun, multiple counts of methamphetamine distribution, possession of weapons in connection with drug trafficking, and engaging in firearms trafficking without a license. Starr's arraignment date is yet to be scheduled.AdThis case highlights federal efforts to address the dangers of illegal firearms and drug distribution, with law enforcement using undercover operations and substantial investigations to tackle high-stakes threats in the community.
