According to information shared by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), the grants will allocate $1.5 million to support innovative AI initiatives across school districts and vocational schools in the state.

The funding, part of Governor Phil Murphy’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget, includes two key programs.

The "Artificial Intelligence Innovation in Education Grant" will provide resources to 10 school districts to advance the use of AI in classrooms.

Meanwhile, the "Expanding Career Pathways in Artificial Intelligence Grant" will fund initiatives in two county vocational school districts to help students develop skills in AI and explore its applications in fields such as computing, engineering, and technology.

“In New Jersey, we are committed to building up our innovation economy and investing in the next generation of tech leaders,” Governor Murphy stated.

“By giving our students the tools necessary to engage with AI, we are ensuring our state remains a national leader in technological advancements for years to come.”

Acting Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer emphasized the importance of equipping students with the skills to thrive in a workforce increasingly shaped by AI.

“The school districts receiving these grants are at the forefront of the future of education. By embracing AI, they are preparing students to excel in a workforce that increasingly requires a deep understanding of how to leverage this technology.”

The grants are designed to address two primary areas of focus: “Teaching with AI” and “Teaching about AI.” The first will enhance instructional practices by piloting generative AI tools, improving teacher training, and offering personalized learning opportunities.

The second will foster AI literacy, emphasizing ethics, societal impacts, and project-based learning opportunities that allow students to explore AI through hands-on activities.

Beth Simone Noveck, New Jersey’s State Chief AI Strategist, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, stating, “By thoughtfully integrating AI literacy and tools into our classrooms, we're democratizing access to these transformative technologies while preparing our next generation of leaders.”

The grants, running through January 31, 2026, aim to position New Jersey as a national leader in educational innovation while preparing students to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
