New Jersey

By: Richard L. Smith

New Jersey is among the 12 states impacted by a Listeria outbreak that has sickened 28 individuals across the country.AdThe outbreak has been linked to meats sliced at deli counters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Investigations reveal that many affected individuals reported consuming meats sliced at delis.

As of July 19, 2024, all 28 reported cases required hospitalization.

Tragically, two deaths have occurred, with one in Illinois and another in New Jersey. The CDC emphasizes that the actual number of cases may be higher, as some individuals recover without medical care and thus are not tested for Listeria.

Additionally, recent cases may not yet be reported due to the time it takes to link them to the outbreak.

Listeria is a resilient bacterium that can spread through deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food.

Refrigeration does not kill the bacterium, but reheating meats to an internal temperature of 165°F can eliminate the germs.

The CDC warns that Listeria poses a particular risk to pregnant individuals, those aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.AdHealth officials recommend that people at higher risk for listeriosis avoid consuming meats sliced at delis or ensure that these products are heated thoroughly before consumption.

The CDC continues to work with local health departments to identify the specific deli products involved in the outbreak and urges anyone with information to come forward.
