Newark's Housing Complex Locked Down After Gunmen Fire Over a Dozen Rounds of Bullets

Newark

Police in Newark shut down vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the Oscar Miles Housing Project after shooters fired over a dozen rounds of bullets in the development Saturday night.

The scary rapid exchange of gunfire had residents ducking for cover inside their homes in the vicinity of Court, Mercer and Broome streets just before 10 p.m.

Multiple Central Ward police officers raced to the scene after locating about a dozen shell casings, but a search of the area indicated no victims.

While police carefully canvass the area for victims, residents began to make their way out of their homes. They expressed concerns about excessive violent episodes in the parking lot of the housing complex with no end in sight.

"It's becoming way too unsafe to even sit outside during nice weather. There is no help for us over in this part of the Central Ward and it's terrifying."

Police officials in Newark are also investigating a broad daylight shots-fired incident near several schools in that section of the city's Central Ward Monday.

Authorities said the wild gun battle erupted while students exited schools near Lincoln and Mercer streets.

Police said the suspects fled the scene and are at large.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
