The magic of Oz lit up Wilson Avenue School this week as nearly 80 students, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade, took center stage in two vibrant performances of The Wizard of Oz

Featuring two full casts, imaginative costumes, and immersive storytelling, the student-led production brought together families, staff, and community members in a joyful celebration of the arts in Newark’s Ironbound section.

The performances highlighted the talents of students as young as five, whose energy and professionalism gave the show the polish of a high school production.

This musical showcased not only the strength of the school’s arts programming but also the creativity and dedication of its staff and volunteers, which is a tradition in Ironbound.

According to Principal Margarita Hernandez, the event was a powerful reflection of what the school community can achieve together.

"This was more than just a play—it was a moment of pride for our entire school. Watching our students perform with such heart and confidence was truly inspiring," she said.

"The arts play such an important role in student growth, and this show reminded us how much our students are capable of when given the chance."

The production was led by the school’s attendance counselor, Ms. Zee Oliveira, whose passion and leadership were essential from the early planning stages through to the final curtain call.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of attending many of Mrs. Zee’s musical productions at the former Ironbound Boys and Girls Club. Her artistic passion and staunch dedication to the craft have jump-started the performing arts careers of hundreds of students.

I regrettably missed this phenomenal work of Art.

Vice Principal Ms. Goncalves played a key role as both a producer and a strong supporter of the musical.

Mrs. Zee told me that music teacher Ms. Srbjak directed the musical performances, helping students bring each scene to life with powerful vocals and harmony.

Teachers also played key behind-the-scenes roles. Second-grade teacher Ms. Oliveira served as stage manager, while first-grade teacher Mr. Pereira handled backstage logistics.

Second-grade teacher Ms. Laranjo managed makeup duties. Art teachers Ms. Ferreira, Mr. Afonso, and Mr. Pereira transformed the stage with creative sets, props, and costumes that brought the Land of Oz to life.

The play was a full school effort, with even non-performing students helping with set changes and backstage work.

Parents also played a vital part, coordinated by the school’s parent liaison Ms. Staciuk, whose outreach brought strong support from families and local community members.

Principal Hernandez also noted the importance of fostering these opportunities.

“We are committed to nurturing the talents of every student. Events like this create lasting memories and help students develop skills that go far beyond the classroom."

The performance is part of a growing trend across New Jersey, where student productions of The Wizard of Oz have become increasingly popular. Schools like J.P. Case Middle School in Flemington recently staged their own version, highlighting the enduring appeal of the beloved tale for young performers.

This version at Wilson Avenue School included many memorable elements from the classic story, such as the colorful Yellow Brick Road, whimsical characters, and themes of courage, heart, and friendship.

The students' enthusiasm and the warmth of the school community made the show much more than a performance—it became a moment of unity, celebration, and pride.

The musical's success reinforces Wilson Avenue School’s ongoing commitment to providing students with meaningful, creative opportunities that help them express themselves and work together toward a shared goal.
