Newark City officials, CEO of Makerhoods Avi Telyas and others will break ground on an innovative approach to urban and economic development, at the historic Krueger-Scott Mansion, the turreted Victorian castle at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Court Street on Thursday, September 17.
Officials say this is a powerful catalyst for micro-entrepreneurs with limited resources, access to capital and networks, Makerhoods combines affordable living, shared spaces for light manufacturing, and business support to help people start and grow profitable businesses.
According to officials, Makerhoods integrates affordable living, the creative explosion of the “maker movement,” business support, and a shared digital platform to catalyze a new paradigm in economic development.
The project will restore and reinvent the Krueger-Scott Mansion, one of Newark’s legendary landmarks, and include new construction on an adjacent lot.
The 40-room mansion was built by Gottfried Krueger, founder of Newark's Krueger Brewing Company in 1888, and more recently, was the childhood home of Rev. Rountree, who coordinates clergy affairs for the City of Newark.
