Two male teens, ages 15 and 16, both of Newark, were arrested following an attempted theft of a motor vehicle on Hillside Avenue that ultimately led to a pursuit at approximately 1 a.m. in the area of Hillside and Chestnut Avenues authorities said.
The two subjects were driving a stolen 2003 Dodge Caravan and were stopped by a Hillside police officer as part of an investigation into an attempted vehicle theft at 327 Hillside Avenue.
The driver waited until the officer was out of her car and then sped away into Irvington cops said.
Officers pursued the occupants through various streets in Irvington and Newark and where they eventually crashed into a gate on Muhammad Ali Avenue in Newark.
The 16-year-old was arrested at the scene. The 15-year-old fled on foot but was apprehended inside an abandoned building.
Both have been charged with eluding, receiving stolen property (mini van), resisting arrest, and charges related to their attempted theft of the vehicle at 327 Hillside Avenue.
One of the subjects was transported to the Union County Juvenile Detention Center and the other to a youth shelter.
