Newark Shooting Response Team was called to the scene of a shooting that severely injured a male in the South Ward.
Shortly before 9:15 p.m., police were dispatched to the vicinity of 179 Brunswick Street to investigate reports of shots fired.
Units arrived at the scene and found a male suffering gunshot wounds to his chest and groin. He was rushed to University Hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.
Police found shell casings inside the building, but no other injuries were reported.
No arrests have been reported.
