Newark authorities are investigating a violent shooting that left two police officers injured in the city’s North Ward on Friday evening.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the incident is under active investigation as law enforcement officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to preliminary reports, the shooting occurred around 6:20 p.m. when officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Broadway and Carteret, where 18 rounds were detected.
Upon arrival, officers encountered gunfire, prompting an urgent request for backup from citywide units.
Two officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
One officer was shot in the head and remains in ‘grave condition’, while the second officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both officers were transported to University Hospital for treatment.
Detectives have secured the scene, blocking off the intersection of Broadway and Carteret as the investigation continues.
Authorities have confirmed that one suspect is in custody and is believed to be the shooter.
