Newark School District Accused of Not Following Anti-lead Protocol

Newark

In a recent article posted by WNYC, Newark schools are accused of not complying with a water flushing protocol that would reduce exposure to lead.

Several months back, city officials revealed that water fountains at more than 30 Newark schools had elevated levels of lead.

According to the article posted by WNYC, under protocol custodians are expected to flush all school water contains for at least two minutes each morning in order to wash out any lead sediment that might have built up in the pipes overnight. A daily log is required to be kept by custodians.

Under a review by WNYC into the city's custodial logs, led them to discover that very few flushes were recorded, leaving it in question whether the fountains were at all flushed.

According to officials, approximately $60,000.00 so far has been spent to address the lead problems.
