Police in Newark reported the arrest of Maurice J. Oates, 51, of Newark, in connection with the discharge of a firearm on Friday, July 21, 2023.
According to police approximately 5:55 p.m., a 2nd Precinct Officer patrolling the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Broadway was flagged down by a concerned citizen who reported that a man had shot a firearm into the air four times.
Police say the officer immediately arrested Oates without further incident.
Officers recovered a 10mm handgun that was in the suspect’s possession.
Oates faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon. He was also issued a summons for discharging a firearm within the city limits.
