An armed carjacking that was reported at gunpoint of a taxi driver in Newark's South Ward had fast responding officers recover the vehicle during the overnight hours.
According to preliminary reports, police were called to the vicinity of 240 Elizabeth Avenue to investigate reports of a carjacking that occurred at approximately 1:35 a.m.
Newark Police officials radioed units on patrol throughout the city where officer beefed-up visual observation in their areas according to reports.
Officers canvassing block by block in Newark's South Ward found the unoccupied taxi cab in the area of Badger and West Runyon at around 1:50 p.m. according to reports.
The driver reported that while occupying the white Dodge Caravan on Elizabeth Avenue, 4-5 black males appeared out of nowhere, with one armed with a gun, demanded the vehicle.
The suspects reportedly jumped in the vehicle then sped away southbound on Irvine Turner Boulevard.
There were no physical injuries reported.
