Newark Police responded to a shooting in the North Ward early Thursday morning and gave credit to a ShotSpotter device for alerting them to gunfire.
The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Gouverneur Street and Mount Pleasant Avenue.
Units arrived and discovered shell casings and immediately called in Newark's Shooting Response Team to assist with the investigation.
A thorough search of the surrounding area revealed no injured victims, indicating that while shots were fired, no one was struck.
The suspect responsible for the gunfire fled the scene and remains at large. The circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation as authorities work to understand the motive and identify the shooter.
