Essex County Prosecutor's Office officials have scheduled a press conference at 10 a.m. to provide further details about the tragic event.

Preliminary reports indicate that just before 6:30 p.m., a ShotSpotter device detected approximately 18 gunshots near the intersection of Carteret Street and Broadway, prompting an immediate police response.

Upon arrival near the White Castle restaurant, officers found two fellow officers wounded.

One had suffered severe injuries, while the other sustained non-life-threatening wounds. Both were transported to University Hospital for treatment, where the critically injured officer was later pronounced dead.

Sources have identified him as Officer Joseph Azcona.

During the violent encounter, at least two suspects were taken into custody. One of them was reportedly seriously wounded, though authorities have not yet confirmed his condition.

Further information is expected to be released during today’s press conference.
