Newark Police Nab Men Wanted for West Ward Carjacking

Two suspect wanted for a carjacking in the city's West Ward was captured by authorities.

Authorities said in a press release that Newark Police arrested Dontrell Hicks, 19, and Deshaun Thompson, 18, both of Newark, for a carjacking in the 100-block of Varsity Road today.

According to authorities, at approximately 1:45 a.m., a 54-year old male victim reported that he was carjacked at gunpoint by five suspects.

Officers canvassing the area observed the vehicle, a silver 2004 Honda CRV, in the intersection of Muhammad Ali Blvd. and Irvine Turner Blvd.

When the officers attempted a motor vehicle stop, the occupants of the vehicle fled, striking four vehicles parked in the 400-block of Irvine Turner Boulevard authorities said.

The suspects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Newark Police apprehended Hicks and Thompson, while the other three suspects remain at large.

Hicks is charged with Carjacking, Eluding, Resisting Arrest, Conspiracy and weapons charges.

Officers also issued Hicks motor vehicle summonses, including Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Failure to Possess a Driver’s License police said.

Thompson is charged with Carjacking, Resisting Arrest, Conspiracy and weapons charges.

These are mere allegations lodged against Thompson and Hicks. The suspects are considering innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
