Newark Police Captain Receives Posthumous Promotion to Deputy Chief

City Officials and Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose and Chief of Police Darnell Henry sadly announce the passing of Newark Police Deputy Chief Robert Sbaraglio.

According to officials, Deputy Chief Sbaraglio was posthumously promoted from Captain today by Mayor Baraka, Director Ambrose, and Chief Henry, after he succumbed to his 10-year battle with cancer late yesterday.

Deputy Chief Sbaraglio joined the department in 1984 and worked numerous assignments as he rose through the ranks, including the Auto Squad, the Traffic Division, the Criminal Investigations Bureau, and was the commander of the Department’s elite Special Enforcement Bureau at the time of his death.

Director Ambrose said Deputy Chief Robert Sbaraglio was a well-respected member of the Police Division and will be missed by all. He served the City of Newark with dedication, honor, and commitment for more than 30-years.

His funeral arrangements will be announced in the future after they are finalized.
