Newark Police Arrest Man Occupying Vehicle Stolen Out of Belleville

A crash that left several people injured on Wednesday night had police take a man into custody.

According to authorities, Tasheem J. Downey, 32, of Newark, in connection with a stolen jeep on Wednesday.

Authorities said at approximately 11:40 p.m., members of the Special Enforcement Bureau (S.E.B.) were canvassing the area of North 13th and 7th avenues when they observed a blue 2002 Jeep Laredo that failed to make a complete stop.

Detectives attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but the driver, Tasheem J. Downey, sped away as they approached the vehicle authorities said.

Officers determined that the jeep was reported stolen out of Belleville and is suspected of being involved in other crimes within the city.

After striking two parked vehicles near the intercession of Orange Street and Roseville Avenue, Downey exited the vehicle and was arrested without further incidence following a brief foot chase.

Downey is charged with Aggravated Assault, Receiving Stolen Property, Eluding and Resisting Arrest.

Two victims of the struck vehicles were transported to University Hospital for treatment.

They are both said to be in stable condition.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
