A 21-year veteran of the Newark police department has been suspended following his third arrest in the last two years.
Authorities confirmed that 48-year-old Peter Chirico, of Toms River, was arrested on Sept. 11th following a domestic incident in a Newark home. Police charged Chirico with aggravated assault, as a result of the incident.
Chirico was released from custody Friday after Superior Court Judge Peter Ryan denied the motion under the state's reform bail system.
According to the department spokesperson, Chirico was immediately suspended from the department without pay following his latest arrest.
According to records, Police also arrested Chirico in September of 2015 and June of 2016. He was suspended nine days without pay and barred from carrying his service weapon after a
restraining order was filed against him in 2015. Officials reinstated Chirico on a modified, unarmed duty.
It is unclear if Chirico received his gun back, or if he continues to serve on modified duty.
No other details were available as to his June 2016 arrest.
