A man who reportedly left his vehicle running with the keys in the ignition in Newark's North Ward contacted police when the car disappeared when he returned.
According to preliminary reports, the victim told police he stepped away from the vehicle to get food from a "chicken shack" in the vicinity of Broadway and Elliot Street at around 11:40 p.m. when an unidentified person entered the car and sped away.
Police searched the area for a black Nissan Maxima with reported NJ license plate numbers "T88-JEH".
The car has dark colored tints according to reports.
Witnesses and North Ward residents reported seeing a vehicle fitting the description speeding through several neighborhoods overnight.
Police are actively investigating the incident.
