Police in Newark are investigating a gunpoint robbery that occurred at a location in the city's North Ward overnight.
The incident was reported in the vicinity of Clay and Broad Street at around 1:55 a.m. where police say they were called to the scene to investigate a robbery in progress.
Upon arrival, officers were informed that a black male suspect approached the victim armed with a gun and demanded personal possessions before fleeing the scene in a dark-colored Chevy with a reported NJ licenses plate number "R74-418".
Police spotted the vehicle on the Broad Street where they briefly followed and tried to get the driver to stop, but the car sped away and was last seen heading eastbound on Route 280.
It is not clear what if anything the suspect took from the victim at this time.
There were no physical injuries reported.
