Two Newark men were arrested this morning after police say they ensued a chase on Route 21.
Police responded to the area of Route 21 at approximately 4 a.m. for a report of stolen 1996 Honda Civic.
When the officer tried to stop the vehicle but the vehicle continued south on Route 21. The pursuit came to s halt ended near the ramp for Dayton Avenue when the vehicle crashed into a pole.
Both occupants - later identified as Ernesto Perez, 26, of Newark (the driver) and Joshusa Alcantata,23, also of Newark (passenger) - tried to flee on foot but police quickly took Alcantara into custody. Perez, disappeared in a nearby area, but was apprehended later with the assistance of a Passaic County Sheriff's Office tracking dog and officers.
Perez and Alcantara were transported to an area hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Perez was remanded to Passaic County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail with no 10-percent option on the eluding charge. He also has a no-bail warrant on a burglary charge.
Alcantara's bail has been set at $75,000 with no 10-percent option on a burglary charge.
