Federal officials said Ramad Moultrie, 23, was sentenced after previously pleading guilty before U.S. District Judge Brian R. Martinotti in Newark federal court.

He faced an indictment on two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.

The case stems from an incident on August 2, 2021, when Newark police officers responded to a shooting at the Grace West Manor Complex on Irvine Turner Boulevard. Upon arrival, authorities discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Surveillance footage from the scene captured Moultrie clearing a crowd, including young children, out of his way before opening fire at the victims. Investigators later recovered three .45 caliber shell casings from the area where Moultrie had discharged his weapon.

Following his arrest at his residence, law enforcement discovered a .45 caliber handgun, a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and illegal drugs.

In addition to his prison sentence, Judge Martinotti ordered Moultrie to serve three years of supervised release once his term is complete.
