Newark Man Identified as Victim of Rt. 21 Belleville Crash That Left Two Dead

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Belleville Police Chief Joseph Rotonda announced today that Jonathan Fontenot, 26, of Newark has been identified as one of the victims killed in the fatal motor vehicle crash on Monday, Nov. 3, on Rt. 21 in Belleville.

Two people were killed. Formal identification of the second victim has not yet been finalized.

The incident occurred on Rt. 21 southbound near milepost 6.4 at approximately 7:25 p.m. The Belleville Police and Fire Departments responded to the area on reports of a multi-vehicle crash. Arriving first responders discovered that three vehicles, a tractor trailer and two passenger vehicles were involved.

The tractor trailer collided with a 2013 Dodge Dart and a 2004 Chevy Cavalier. Both the passenger and the driver in the Cavalier were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dodge Dart was driven by a 27-year-old Bloomfield man. He was not injured. The 48-year-old truck driver also did not sustain any injuries.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed against anyone in connection with the crash, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.
