Newark Man Gets Life in Prison for Fatal Shooting of Jersey City Boy

A 37-year-old Newark man was sentenced this morning to life in prison plus an additional 50 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy.

After Gunter addressed the victim's family claiming he did not kill the boy. The judge noted that Gunter had a total of 10 criminal convictions including an aggravated assault as a juvenile and despite that and the overwhelming evidence, he showed no remorse nor reaction as he was being sentenced.

His accomplices, 28-year-old Janice S. Everett, of Rahway, and 36-year-old Shawn Harris, of Irvington pleaded guilty to lesser charges after cooperated in Gunter's prosecution.

On May 17, 2013, Gywan Levine Jr., 12, Levine Jr., and his father Gywan, 31, were coming back from playing basketball sometime around 9:50 p.m., when three men approached them and gunfire erupted on Rutgers Avenue. Both were transported to Jersey City Medical Center where Levine Jr. was pronounced dead and Levine Sr. was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.
