A somber investigation is occurring in Newark’s South Ward after a man was found fatally shot near Shanazz Stadium on Thursday night, triggering a swift response from local law enforcement and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The incident came to light following reports of suspicious activities in the vicinity of the stadium.
Upon their arrival, police discovered a man with gunshot wounds near the stadium's dumpsters, located close to the bleachers.
The area was quickly cordoned off as part of the initial crime scene investigation.
The victim has been identified as Mr. Akmid S. Sutton, a resident of Newark. Despite the prompt response of emergency services, Sutton was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken the lead on the investigation, which remains active and ongoing.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward,
