Newark Man Found Not Guilty of Gun Charges After Found Unconscious with Loaded Gun

A Newark man, among four men charged in the fatal Short Hills carjacking, was acquitted of the charge of unlawful possession of a weapon after he passed out on a city lawn while in possession of a loaded handgun back in 2013.

On March 9, 2013, Karif Ford, who appeared sick or hurt, collapsed on the front lawn of the home in the area of Muhammad Ali Drive and Prince Street so time around 9 p.m. 

Police responded to the scene after a 911 call. Upon arrival, the officer found Ford passed out on the lawn. While checking to see of Ford was breathing, police found a loaded gun pointing out of Ford's jacket. 

Ford's attorney argued wether his client "knowingly" possessed the handgun when he passed out making him not guilty, therefore should not face charges.
