A Newark resident has been charged with multiple firearm and narcotics offenses, following an investigation, according to information released by Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna.
Khalif Irving, 25, of Newark, New Jersey, is facing charges detailed in a three-count federal complaint, which include possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. Irving, also known as "Kah Kah," made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Hammer in Newark federal court on January 24, where he was ordered to remain in custody.
Court documents and statements provided in the case reveal that Irving had been using social media platforms to advertise narcotics for sale while posting images of firearms.
On January 23, 2025, Irving reportedly concealed a loaded firearm in a utility box attached to a building at the Janice Kromer Village apartments.
Shortly after, law enforcement retrieved the firearm, apprehended Irving, and found suspected narcotics on his person.
The charges carry significant penalties. The possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon could result in a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl carries a potential maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to $1 million.
Additionally, the possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could result in a life sentence, with penalties to run consecutively to other sentences, and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to address the intersection of drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
