Newark Man Crashes Into Cars, Trees in Attempt to Escape Drug Arrest

Newark

A Newark man was arraigned today on multiple drug and assault charges following his arrest on Tuesday afternoon by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.

In response to neighborhood complaints of open-air drug trafficking in the area of 1st Street and 7th Avenue, Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation at that location yesterday,

“Our detectives immediately observed Reynaldo Jackman, 37 of Newark, sitting behind the wheel of a parked 2000 Lincoln LS,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “Jackman was soon approached by a female, Deyidet Collazo, 37 also of Newark. Collazo was known to the officers from previous arrests.”

After a brief conversation with Collazo, Jackman removed an item from a clear plastic sandwich bag and exchanged it with her for cash.

Collazo was followed from the scene and was found to be in possession of a heroin-filled glassine envelop. She was placed under arrest and secured in a sheriff’s vehicle.

“When our officers moved in to further investigate the actions of Jackman the suspect put his vehicle into reverse and then forward in an attempt to flee the scene,” the sheriff added. “During these maneuvers Jackman slammed into our vehicles and he eventually succeeded in gaining access to the sidewalk where he crashed into two trees.”

The sheriff detectives positioned their vehicles to block further maneuvering by Jackman but the suspect was successful in moving his vehicle until it again crashed into another tree.

“Jackman then gathered up materials from his car and attempted to make a run for it,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “He was quickly tackled to the ground where he repeatedly punched and kicked our officers before they could subdue him.”

In taking Jackman into custody, Jackman was found to be in possession of 99 heroin-filled glassine envelops, stamped ‘DEMOLITION’ in red ink, 15 paper folds of ‘crack’ cocaine, 48 Xanax tablets and $150 in cash.

During the efforts to apprehend Jackman, Collazo ran from the scene but was re-arrested a few hours later at 4th Avenue and 9th Street.

Jackman was charged with 24 criminal counts including the sale, possession and distribution of controlled dangerous substances, three counts of aggravated assault, the unlawful possession of a weapon (the Lincoln), eluding and resisting arrest.

At today’s arraignment, Jackman was ordered held at the county jail in lieu of $200,000 cash bond only.

Collazo was charged with possession of CDS and escape. She will be arraigned at a later date.
