In a recent verdict delivered by an Essex County jury, Nasean Torres, 49, has been found guilty of the murder of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kelley, who was 55.
The trial, presided over by Superior Court Judge Ronald D. Wigler, concluded on Thursday, December 14, after a rigorous three-week examination of the evidence.
Elizabeth Kelley, a mother and grandmother, met a tragic end in July last year when Newark Police discovered her body in the basement of a residence at 47 Palm Street, Newark.
Investigations revealed that Kelley died from manual strangulation and multiple stab wounds.
The jury took less than an hour to convict Torres on multiple counts, including murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The swift decision reflects the overwhelming evidence presented during the trial.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, highlighted the severity of the crime and its impact on Kelley's family.
Assistant Prosecutors Jason Alterbaum and Brianna Sandroni, who led the prosecution, expressed hope that this verdict brings some solace to Kelley’s family.
They also acknowledged the crucial role of law enforcement and the witnesses whose testimony was vital for securing justice.
Torres now faces a life sentence in New Jersey State Prison, with a mandatory minimum of 30 years before parole eligibility.
The sentencing is scheduled for February 9, 2024.
This case stands as a grim reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of the legal system in providing justice for victims and their families.
