Following a three-week trial, a jury convicted 34-year-old Dwayne Barbour on April 4 of aggravated assault and weapons offenses tied to the attack, which occurred on May 4, 2022.

Authorities said Barbour lay in wait for 31-year-old Daren Brooks outside an East Orange residence.

As Brooks arrived, Barbour launched a sudden and violent attack, forcing the victim to flee down the street in an attempt to escape.

Barbour pursued Brooks and eventually caught up with him, stabbing him more than 10 times in a relentless assault.

Prosecutors say the evidence presented at trial painted a clear picture of premeditation and extreme violence.

Barbour now faces a potential prison sentence ranging from 5 to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.

Due to the state’s No Early Release Act, he must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence before being eligible for parole.
