Essex County authorities announced that a jury convicted Ahmir Worthy, 29, of Newark, of aggravated assault for beating his 23-year-old girlfriend, a crime of domestic violence, causing her significant bodily injury.
According to officials, Worthy and the victim were at a party in Newark in August 2019.
Officials said the two argued verbally, after which Worthy punched, kicked, and slammed her against the wall multiple times.
She was taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark and later to University Hospital, where she was treated for a concussion, contusions, and deep bruising. According to authorities, on April 27, following a three-day trial, the jury found Worthy guilty of one-third-degree aggravated assault.
When he is sentenced on June 26, Worthy faces up to five years in New Jersey State Prison.
“I would like to thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward and testifying in this case,” said Calderon.
“The jury returned a just verdict that will provide closure and justice for the victim.”
