Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Director Anthony A. Caputo of the New Brunswick Police Department said today that a Newark man has been charged with shooting two people in New Brunswick.
Demetrius Lee, 33, faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon in the August 22, 2016 shooting of a 23-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.
Lee is being held without bail at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center.
The victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where the woman is listed in stable condition and the man is listed as critical.
Lee also is being held on charges filed in two other, separate and unrelated incidents.
In one of the cases, he was charged with attempted murder and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash on August 9, 2016. Police charged that he intentionally drove into and ran over a 37-year-old woman at Throop Avenue and Delavan Street.
She was taken to the New Brunswick hospital and was treated and released.
Lee was apprehended by police on August 25, 2016 as he sat in a car on Chester Circle in New Brunswick. He subsequently was charged with possession of a handgun that was found in the car, possession of the weapon for an unlawful purpose, and receiving stolen property identified as the handgun. The weapon was not believed to be the one used in the August 22, 2016 double shooting.
As the result of a prior, unrelated conviction, Lee also was charged with a count of certain persons not permitted to have a weapon.
