Authorities announced the arrest of Shymere M. Banks, 24, of Newark, for possession of an assault rifle in an incident that occurred yesterday.
According to officials, at approximately 6:20 p.m., police responded to the Bradley Courts Complex on North Munn Avenue for reports of individuals conducting narcotics transactions in one of the buildings.
Upon arrival, officers observed Banks engaged in a narcotics transaction and attempted to flee when he became aware of police presence. Before Banks was taken into custody, he resisted the arrest and was found in possession of an AR-15 assault rifle.
According to police, Banks was charged with two counts of Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (large capacity magazine and sawed-off shot gun), Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Obstruction of the Administration of the Law.
These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
