Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that members of the Special Enforcement Bureau (S.E.B.) have arrested Matthew K. Spencer, 24, of Newark for possession of a loaded weapon and marijuana last night.
According to police, at approximately 9:50 p.m., S.E.B. detectives patrolling the area of Sayre and West Kinney streets observed a vehicle with a cracked windshield and initiated a motor vehicle stop.
When detectives approached, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.
The driver, Spencer, was unable to produce a driver’s license and was asked to step out of the vehicle.
Detectives observed a loaded Glock 35 handgun and a fanny pack containing 14 bags of suspected marijuana in the vehicle.
Spencer was arrested without incident and is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon While Committing a CDS Offense, Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession, Possession of CDS, Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute, Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute within 1,000-ft. of a School and Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute within 500-ft. of a Public Housing Complex.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
