Police arrested and charged him with possession of thousands of illegal fireworks authorities said.
In an effort to reduce the likelihood of injuries caused by illegal fireworks, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose instructed the Police Division to exhibit a zero tolerance enforcement posture towards those using or possessing fireworks.
According to authorities a citizen called the police shortly after 7pm and reported that a man was selling fireworks from a parked car in the 200 block of Vassar Avenue.
Officers drove to Vassar Avenue to investigate the allegation when they saw 35-year-old, Newark resident, Ahmad Harris looking in his car’s trunk authorities said.
As the officers neared Harris, they saw a number of fireworks in the trunk.
The officers seized the fireworks, arrested Harris without incident and charged him with the possession of illegal fireworks.
The confiscated fireworks totaled more than 6,300 and included Bunker Bombs, hundreds of Bottle Rockets of varying sizes, Boomers, Festival Shells, Saturn Missiles, Roman Candles and numerous other types of fireworks authorities said.
Director Ambrose applauded the officers for the arrest.
“Getting these fireworks off our streets, may have saved someone from serious injury or possibly death. We will continue our zero-tolerance enforcement efforts and we urge the public to help us by reporting those using or possessing illegal fireworks.”
