Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced the arrest of a Newark man charged with possession with the intent to distribute heroin and possession with the intent to distribute crack-cocaine.
Jessie Smith of Newark, was arrested as a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Narcotic Task Force under the direction of Chief Carmen Martino, the Mahwah Police Department under the direction of Chief James Batelli and the East Rutherford Police Department under the direction of Chief Larry Minda. On October 20, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force detectives (acting in undercover capacities) arranged to purchase seventeen bricks of suspected heroin from Smith in East Rutherford. Later on this same date, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force, the Mahwah Police Department and the East Rutherford Police Department arrested Smith without incident in East Rutherford. Smith possessed seventeen bricks of suspected Heroin (totaling 850 individual bags) and twenty four individual bags of suspected Crack-Cocaine at the time of his arrest. The estimated street value of the controlled dangerous substances seized on this date is approximately $5,000.00. Smith was charged with one (1) count of possession with the Intent to distribute heroin, a second degree crime, and (1) one count of possession with the Intent to distribute crack-cocaine, a third degree crime. Bail for Smith was set by the Honorable Louis J. Dinice, J.S.C. at $50,000 with no ten percent option. Smith was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
