Newark Man Arrested for Attacking Good Samaritan with Machete

A 49-year-old Newark man was arrested and charged with an aggravated assault that occurred yesterday.

According to police, at approximately 10 p.m., officers and members of the Newark Police Division’s Emergency Services Unit responded to a Central Ward residence on a call of an assault.

Upon arrival, police learned that as a man was walking in the area, he observed a male physically assaulting a woman, so he intervened. The male suspect then began to assault the Good Samaritan using a machete and a knife and then took his personal property, which he dropped during the attack.

The victim was transported University Hospital for treatment and was later released.

Officers located the suspect, later identified as Cedric Lee, 49, of Newark, hiding in the hallway of a nearby building.

Police arrested Lee and charged him with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Theft.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
