A Newark man was taken into custody after ensuing a pursuit in Union.
According to police, cops were on patrol in a marked police vehicle when he received a radio transmission that Maplewood Police had been in pursuit of a Toyota Corolla that was carjacked out of Newark on May 19th, but the vehicle was lost along the Union-Maplewood border.
Police spotted the vehicle in the area of Ostwood Terrace and Stuyvesant Avenue at approximately 1:11 a.m.
The officer ordered the vehicle to stop but it accelerated away at a high rate of speed and a motor vehicle pursuit ensued.
The vehicle was pursued into Weequahic Park in Newark where the suspect lost control of the car and struck a tree and bench inside of the park.
The suspect, later identified as 19 year old William Alvarado-Jones of Newark, was taken into custody by Sgt. Florio after a brief foot pursuit.
Alvarado – Jones was transported to an area hospital for evaluation before being turned over to the custody of the Newark and Maplewood Police Departments.
He was charged with eluding and receiving stolen property by Union Police along with being issued motor vehicle summonses.
Maplewood Police are also investigating an attempted carjacking involving the suspect and the Corolla was wanted by Newark PD for several strong-armed robberies.
