A collaboration initiated between several Essex County law enforcement agencies assisted in an early morning arrest of two adults and a juvenile wanted for an armed carjacking in Newark's Ironbound Section Sunday morning.
In a preliminary investigation, Newark Police were notified of a carjacking in progress in the vicinity of McWhorter and Vesey Street before 4:10 a.m.
Officers arrived and met the victim, who reported that two suspects took the vehicle then sped away.
Newar East Ward officers canvassing the area found the vehicle occupied by two males and attempted to pull the driver over.
Police say the suspects ignored the officer's lights and sirens then sped away, ultimately leading police on a high speed in the westbound lanes of I-280.
During the pursuit, officials in Newark notified East Orange and Orange police departments of the incident, where they began to patrol their areas around I-280.
According to police, the driver of the carjacked vehicle exited the highway near exit 11b in Orange and slammed into a fence of a construction site on Reock Street just before 4:18 a.m.
Police say both males bailed from the car and lead officers on a pursuit where Newark Police swiftly captured the first suspect near the crash scene. The second suspect was apprehended with the assistance of Orange Police, who arrived at the scene to assist in the pursuit.
Officials detained a third suspect who is believed to have also been involved in the carjacking.
One of the suspects reported to police that he experienced asthma symptoms and required some medical attention; other than that, no other injuries or vehicles were involved in the collision.
Newark Police will handle the investigation.
