Newark Basketball Star Shines as Nigeria Stuns Australia in Olympic Basketball in Paris

A Newark native showcased an incredible display of talent, leading world No. 12 Nigeria to a memorable victory over Australia in women’s basketball at the Paris Olympics today.

Newark According to the Associated Press, Ezinne Kalu, a pivotal figure in the game, made her mark by scoring 17 of her 19 points in the first half, securing Nigeria’s first Olympic win in women’s basketball since 2004.

Kalu, known for her determination and dedication, made her first four 3-pointers and was instrumental in putting Nigeria ahead 18-17 after the first quarter, scoring 11 points, including three three-pointers.

She continued to dominate in the second quarter, helping Nigeria secure a 75-62 victory over Australia in their group play opener The Associated Press noted.

This victory marks Kalu’s second time qualifying for Nigeria’s Olympic team. She previously participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July 2021, where she led the Nigerian team with 16 points in a narrow loss to Team USA.

Born and raised in Newark, Kalu began her educational journey at South 17th Street School in the West Ward just outside of West Side Park.

She attended Science Park High School, where she became the first woman in the school's history to score over 2,000 points.

Newark Her jersey was retired in December 2017. After graduating in 2010, Kalu received a full scholarship to HBCU Savannah State University in Savannah, GA.

RLS Media learned that it was there that she led her team to their first MEAC Championship in 2015 and became the first player in the school's history to score over 2,000 career points, graduating in May 2015.

The defeat of Australia has sent some shockwaves through the international Olympic basketball community and highlighted Kalu’s exceptional talent and leadership.
