New York Man, Livery Driver Shot Dead in Newark

Newark - - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the fatal shooting of a livery taxi cab driver.

According to authorities, Rodrigo Berru, 45, of New York was fatally shot last night at approximately 9:45 pm in the 300 block of Frelinghuysen Ave.

Police said a passer-by called when they noticed the man slumped over the steering wheel inside the vehicle. 

Arriving units found  Berru, who works for Classic Taxi, was unresponsive and unconscious and was pronounced dead at 9:47 pm.

The investigation is active and ongoing. At this time no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

Authorities said that this is the 59 th homicide in Newark this year.
