New Brunswick Teen Sentenced for Head-On Collision That Injured Three Others

New Brunswick

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said today that an 18-year-old has been sentenced to serve 6 years with the Juvenile Justice Commission for the aggravated assault of three others.

According to authorities, Karla Mejia, 18, of New Brunswick, was sentenced to serve an aggregate sentence of 6-years; two 3-year sentences for the second degree crimes of aggravated assault of three others caused during an automobile crash when Mejia was driving under the influence.

The sentence was imposed on November 29, 2017 in Middlesex County Family Court. Mejia previously pleaded guilty during a juvenile court hearing in New Brunswick to juvenile delinquency for conduct that if committed by an adult would constitute an aggravated assault upon two other youths riding in her car, and the driver of another vehicle.

According to authorities, Mejia, who was 17 years old at the time, was charged after an investigation by the North Brunswick Police Department determined that she caused a head-on collision on May 12, 2017 in which three other people were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, two of which had multiple serious injuries.
