Police officials in Newark reported 146 firearms surrendered during Saturday’s gun buy back program held at Prudential Center.
Officials said the total number of firearms surrendered included 29 shotguns, 94 handguns and ten assault weapons.
At least one firearm is known to have been reported stolen.
According to Newark officials, the gun buyback program is sponsored by New Jersey Acting Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck and Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, III, and was awarded a total of $19,260.00 from forfeiture funds to individuals who volitionally surrendered firearms.
It is not clear what the money would be used for.
Officials said the program was aimed at reducing the proliferation of firearms in the community in order to save lives, whether from criminal gun violence or other tragedies.
By the end of July, Newark Police said they recovered a total of 445 illegal firearms.
