Newark Police are investigating a shots-fired incident that occurred early Friday morning in the Central Ward.
The incident was first detected by a ShotSpotter device, which alerted authorities to multiple rounds of gunfire near the intersection of Central Avenue and West Market Street at approximately 1:50 a.m.
When officers arrived, they secured the scene and located several shell casings.
A thorough search of the area revealed no victims, and officials contacted nearby University Hospital to be on alert for potential walk-in gunshot victims.
As of 4:30 a.m., no one had arrived at the hospital with injuries.
Authorities are reviewing local surveillance footage to gather more information on the motive for the shooting. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
