Newark Police officials have announced the arrest of six adults and four juveniles linked to various shooting incidents that took place in January 2024. None of the suspects were charged with several homicides that occurred during the month.
Accoridng to Newark Police, Mr. Terrel D. Dillahunt, 28, from West Orange, was apprehended on January 11, 2024, for his involvement in a firearm discharge incident on January 1, 2024, at University Avenue and Campbell Street in Newark. He is charged with weapon possession.
On January 19, 2024, Newark Police said Mr. Antwan W. Sumpter-Robinson, 38, of Newark, surrendered through the Safe Surrender Program. He was wanted for a similar incident on January 1, 2024, at the same location and faces aggravated assault, weapon possession, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession charges.
Newark officials say Mr. Darion Canary, 31, of Jersey City, was arrested on January 12, 2024, for a shooting on January 1, 2024, in the 900 block of Broad Street. Canary, already in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility, is charged with aggravated assault and weapon possession.
Accoridng to Newark Police, Ms. Gloria Gonzalez, 38, and Dante Brown, 31, both from Newark, were arrested on January 21, 2024, following an armed robbery and shooting incident on Bloomfield Avenue. Brown, after attempting an armed robbery, discharged a firearm during a struggle, but no injuries were reported. Gonzalez, the getaway driver, and Brown face aggravated assault and robbery charges. Mr. Shukri Sharif, 41, of Newark, was arrested on January 17, 2024, linked to a January 15 shooting at Cypress Street near Fabyan Place. Following a shots-fired alert, police reviewed surveillance footage showing Sharif involved in the incident. He was stopped and arrested while driving the suspect vehicle, facing aggravated assault, weapon possession, and criminal mischief charges.
Police say a 15-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 20, 2024, after a shooting at James Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. He was found with a 9mm ghost gun and faces charges including aggravated assault, weapon possession, conspiracy, and firearm possession by a minor.
A 14-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 22, 2024, following a shooting in the 200 block of Aldine Street. He was observed on surveillance shooting at three individuals and faces aggravated assault and weapon possession charges.
A 17-year-old from Newark surrendered to police on January 26, 2024, for a shooting on January 11 in the 300 block of South Orange Avenue, where two juveniles were shot. Accompanied by a parent, the 17-year-old faces charges including aggravated assault and firearm possession by a minor.
Another 15-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 29, 2024, for involvement in a January 25 shooting at Chester Avenue near Oraton Street.
Identified from surveillance footage, he was arrested while already in custody for a separate robbery case. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and firearm possession by a minor.
